Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

I loved this movie. Like, everything about it. The story is awesome, the animation is awesome, the voices are awesome, the characters are awesome, the soundtrack is awesome. It’s just awesome.

I thought this movie was just okay. It’s got some good action scenes, but it’s very cliche. Woman’s family gets murdered, woman learns how to kick butt, woman gets her revenge. The biggest problem, as Sheena pointed out pretty early on in the movie, is that you just don’t feel any connection to the characters. As bad as it sounds, you just don’t really care what happens to anyone. It’s worth checking out if you are looking to see Jennifer Garner kick some butts, but otherwise, pretty meh.

Summer of 84

Another one that was just okay. Kids are going missing, “our” group of kids are on the case! This movie desperately wants to be Stand By Me. And let’s just be honest, nothing will ever be Stand By Me. It wasn’t necessarily boring, but it wasn’t real riveting, either. Everything just kinds goes how you think it’ll go.

Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle

I like The Jungle Book. I thought 2016’s “live” version was really good. This version is good, too. Maybe not quite AS good, but good, and in a very different way. This version takes the story in a much darker direction. I can dig that. I didn’t like the animation as much in this one, but overall, it’s a really interesting retelling of the story.

Fyre Fraud

I didn’t really care to see this, because the whole thing just sounded like rich people problems, but when Netflix and Hulu put out docs about something around the same time, maybe there’s something interesting about it? And there is. This is the Hulu doc, and now I look forward to seeing what might be different about the Netflix one. There are definitely things about this story that I just don’t care about. Social media “influencers,” for instance. Ugh. I could do without ever hearing about those types of people ever again. But the criminal, scammy parts of this “tragedy” are pretty interesting. Watch if you’re intrigued at all.

The Kindergarten Teacher

This is a slow one, but I dug it. It’s weird, and creepy, but also kind of hopeful, in a really strange way. Probably not something most people would enjoy, but if you don’t mind a quiet, thoughtful story, you might like this. For sure an interesting, original movie. And I really liked the ending.

Bohemian Rhapsody

Queen is one of those bands that I really like, but I never think about them at all. But when certain songs come on the radio, or when I hear a snippet of a Brian May solo, I get pumped up. They’re just a fun band, with some great music. I thought this biopic, more-so about Freddie Mercury than the band as a whole, was good. Maybe not as good as I was hoping, but I enjoyed it. There are definitely some cheesy sections, and some sections that go on a bit too long, but overall, it’s an interesting story. More than anything, Rami Malek is pretty fantastic. Definitely worth seeing if you like the band.
