Phantom Thread

(The acting was great, though.)

The Post

This desperately wants to be what Spotlight was in 2015. It’s not. The subject matter is interesting, and definitely very timely, but the movie just isn’t that exciting or engaging. The cast is amazing, but no one in particular really shines (is Michael Stuhlbarg just going to be in everything now? I’d be okay with that.). Overall, pretty meh.

Darkest Hour

The fact that this is essentially about the governmental side of Dunkirk is so crazy to me. That seems to happen a lot in Hollywood: two movies come out at the same time about the same subject, or that compliment each other. I have no idea if it’s ever on purpose, but having already seen Dunkirk made this movie even better to me. I honestly didn’t expect to care too much about it, but it sucked me in pretty quick. It’s actually quite witty, and I laughed out loud a few times. I may have even had a quick cry at one point. The acting, especially by Oldman, is phenomenal, and the cinematography is some of the best I’ve seen in a long time. There were so many iconic shots throughout. Of all the other Best Picture nominees, this one feels most like a Best Picture to me. And Oldman no doubt deserves Best Actor. See this movie.
