Room

Whoa. This movie is emotional. I watched it at work, and may or may not have cried in my office. Don’t tell anyone. Seeing the world through this kid’s eyes is fascinating, which is mostly a testament to how awesome Jacob Tremblay plays the part. This is definitely one everyone should see. Slap it near the top of my favorite movies of 2015. It’s powerful.

Anomalisa

This is a strange little film. It’s written by Charlie Kaufman, so going into it, I knew it would be weird. The stop-motion animation is very different and kind of hypnotizing. They do some things with voices and language that is really unique and interesting. It’s a very adult story, which is sometimes strange to see in an animated form, but I think it really works well here. And the humor, though very subtle and scarce, is really witty. It also feels like a very real life story, which is strange since there isn’t any real life involved. Although this movie is definitely not for everyone, I quite enjoyed it.

The Big Short

The subject matter of this movie is something I know nor care anything about. That being said, it’s still interesting. If nothing else, it’s style is pretty unique and fun. The acting is fantastic and the humor is subtle and weird and great. The fact that a bunch of awful people screwed the weakest and poorest (and then some) out of their hard-earned money, and no one has really paid a price for that, still blows my mind. This story is a pretty crazy one, and even though all the math may not be something you or I care about, it’s a story that should be known. And, again, if you’re gonna make a movie about this story, this was a great way to tell it.

Spotlight

This is a tough one. It’s a well made movie, and definitely a story that needed to be told, but it’s not the most engaging of movies or subject matter. There are so many names in this movie, I eventually just gave up trying to remember who was who. In the end, I guess it didn’t really matter. You still get the point of the movie, the scale of the scandal, and just how screwed up the whole thing is/was. The cast is fantastic, and the fact that I didn’t know just how crazy and deep this story went is pretty incredible. It’s a tough one to get through, on a few levels, but it’s definitely something you should see.

Bridge of Spies

Apparently true stories are popular with the folks who choose the nominees for Best Picture. This movie is obviously very well made and very well acted, but it’s not a super exciting story. It is quite interesting, though. I honestly wasn’t sure or not if it was based on true events until the end, and that definitely made me like it more (because it is). This isn’t something I care to ever watch again, but it’s definitely worth seeing.

The Martian

This is a cool movie, but I’m not quite sure why it was nominated for Best Picture. It’s nothing really new or daring or unique. But whatever. It’s a good movie. Matt Damon is great, as is the rest of the cast. Nothing really happens that you wouldn’t expect, but it’s still pretty dang suspenseful. Another one worth checking out.

Brooklyn

This movie is good. But it’s just that: good. It’s a good story with some good acting, but it’s nothing all that special. SORRY! It’s a period/drama/love story, and goes about it the way any other period/drama/love story does. If that’s your thing, you’ll love it. It’s not really my thing. And Best Picture? No way.

you forgot to mention that The Martian is also based on a true story.
