Recent Viewings – Boyhood.

August 27, 2014

This movie is a little over two and a half hours long, and I think it took about an hour before I realized I was really enjoying it. The acting is hit or miss, and there are some scenes that just don’t work, but the scope of this thing is amazing. You’re literally watching a boy (the whole cast, really) grow up before your eyes. It’s almost too weird. The boy who is the main focus is good/fine most of the time, although when he goes through some of his awkward teen years, he also goes through some awkward bad acting years, but to me, Ethan Hawke is the stand out here. He is excellent as the dead beat dad who’s come back to try and make up for some lost time. I was really least impressed with Patricia Arquette, although I’ve heard people say the opposite. She just felt fake, to me, in this very realistic world of mundane car rides, bad haircuts, and weekend bowling trips (with no bumpers). Also, the soundtrack is fantastic. It’s full of songs that reminded me of certain times in my own life, which helped me get more involved in the time and place of the story. I don’t think it was until after the movie had ended, and I had a little time to process it, that I actually realized how special the whole thing really was. And even though it’s a really long movie in which nothing all that unexpected happens, it never got old and never felt slow. That’s pretty amazing.
